In this talk Professor Lund provides an introduction to the core concepts of a public mental health approach. He describes the current burden of mental disorders and challenges related to the lack of policy and budget commitment to mental health. He then describes more recent global and South African mental health policy and research developments and concludes with a presentation of some local innovations, including the Programme for Improving Mental health care (PRIME) and potential models for the Western Cape.
