Louise Ashton is a Speech-Language Therapist and Audiologist who became certified as an Auditory Verbal Therapist whilst working at Auditory Verbal UK in London. In this talk, she considers listening and language development in early childhood, looking at how this process unfolds in the interaction between parent and child. Louise particularly focuses on the reciprocal communication between parent and child, which promotes the development of language capacities such as listening, communicating, and theory of mind. Louise provides a literature review looking at the impact of electronic and busy toys on the quality of interaction between parents and children, emphasizing good old-fashioned play and its role in facilitating rich interaction, while acknowledging that electronic toys are part of the fabric of our lives. Louise looks at how play can be used successfully in speech-language therapy sessions to optimally promote development, and then focuses in on the features of different developmental stages between 0 and 36 months.
