Neuropsychologist Digby Ormond-Brown introduces DTI as 'sexy radiology'. He explains clearly how DTI can offer insight into brain functioning that traditional MRI scans cannot. While traditional scans show the anatomical structures of the brain, DTI shows the flow of fluid in neural tracts, indicating the intactness of neural pathways and transmission. Digby gives a case example where a traditional MRI scan did not adequately explain a case of organic amnesia, while DTI showed disruptions in the integrated flow of neural impulses in the corpus callosum. Digby is an enthusiastic advocate of the increased use of DTI, to provide insight into brain function.
