Psychoanalyst and sociologist Professor Don Carveth offers an illuminating talk on group psychology, addressing the classic question of how individuals’ behaviour can change in the group context.
Prof. Carveth looks at Freud's ideas about groups as outlined in Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921), offering an analysis of Freud's understanding, and looking at other writings which focus on regression in the context of groups. Prof. Carveth looks at Wilfred Bion's influential ideas around 'work groups' versus 'basic Assumption groups'. He then considers models of group psychology explored in the novel Lord of the Flies.
