This composite lecture offers a psychoanalytic view of our ethical responsibilities towards our clients. Five clinicians comprising the SAPC Ethics Advisory Committee (EAC) discuss how this way of interpreting ethical responsibilities provides valuable guidelines which serve our clients’ ultimate best interests, including therapists’ responsibility to attend to their countertransference responses, the importance of a reflective space to think about our work with clients, and the complexity of informed consent. The lecture also addresses what it means to practice psychotherapy in South Africa, given the unique history and the nature of the social unconscious in this context.
The South African Psychoanalytic Confederation (SAPC) is a body which unites under one organisation clinicians whose therapeutic work is informed by psychoanalytic theory and its application. In this video, the speakers each contribute an insert on an aspect of the SAPC Code of Ethics. This Code was developed by members of the SAPC, as a document which outlines what is meant by ‘psychoanalytic’ ethics, and guides clinicians who see their work as informed by both the HPCSA Code of Ethics, and the ethical imperatives suggested by psychoanalytic thinking.
