The first of three courses on narcissism, this introduction gives South African psychologists a foundational understanding of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It traces narcissism from its mythological and historical roots through to its current conceptualisation in the DSM, covering aetiology, diagnostic criteria, differentials and common comorbidities. Participants also consider the varied and often contradictory ways narcissism presents, what this means for treatment planning, and where research gaps remain. The course is accredited by the HPCSA for CPD points and suits clinicians who want to look past surface-level traits and work with these clients from a better-informed position.
Narcissism is increasingly present in clinical settings, yet remains one of the most misunderstood and under-researched areas in psychology. This CPD event, the first in a series of 3 on the subject, offers a foundational exploration of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) from its mythological and historical roots to its current conceptualisation in the DSM.
