DIR:Floortime: An Overview

CPD Courses For Health Care Professionals | South Africa, Australia, Canada & The UK

DIR is the Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based model and this model provides a framework for therapists, doctors, teachers and parents to assess and treat those on the autistic spectrum and related conditions in a developmentally appropriate manner. This model focuses on the use of affect-based interactions based on individual needs in order to promote development. The goal of the DIR® model is to enable children with sensory processing challenges to form a sense of themselves as intentional, interactive individuals, who can develop cognitive, language, and social capacities. This calls for the mastery of six functional developmental levels using comprehensive interventions that treat problems related to gaps in these foundational capacities. This talk outlines the history of the DIR model as well as the 3 components of the model and provides basics principles for intervention. The 3 components are:

·        The “D” Functional Emotional Developmental Levels (FEDLs) describe capacities that have an integrative force moving development forward – from regulation and shared attention, to engagement, to two-way communication, to social problem-solving, creating ideas and abstract thinking. There are 9 levels but the first 6 are focused on in this presentation.

·        The “I”  Individual differences – the impact the child’s various sensory motor processes and regulation have on development. (what the child brings). The presentation discusses the importance of understanding the work of the multidisciplinary team while remaining within your professional scope of practice

·        The “R”  Relationships are the vehicle for learning and feeling, and take culture and environment into account. (what the parent and family bring). In this presentation we outline the value of relationships and how this model delivers interventions ‘through’ the parent or primary caregiver.
