On Villains and Victims in Couple Attachments

This talk deals with the nature of perception, subjectivity, memory, and injury that leads to couple conflict. Rooted in the psychology and neurobiology of the aggressive drive, the talk focusses on a poorly understood area of human conflict and the ubiquitous nature of aggression as a preservatory drive. Whilst commonly understood as a destructive drive, this talk will make clearer the underlying nature and aim of the drive rather than its observed effects: namely, that in essence the aggressive drive which causes so much conflict in couples is really a drive created in evolution for conservation and preservation. Understanding this aim, rather than its effects, assists the clinician in understanding better both the nature of symptoms in the individual and also the nature of conflict in the couple - particularly, that no-one sees themselves as the villains in their own story and addressing these projections and perceptions promotes better clinical outcomes.
