Road to Independence Model for Assessment and Accommodation of Persons with Hearing Loss

South Africa

The Road to Independence Model, with its Protocol & Guidelines, is a South African model developed in line with the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the SA Legislation, Codes and Guidelines. The Model contains information on human rights, legislation, networks for support, integration, accessibility, etc. The Protocol & Guidelines identifies the functional needs of the hearing- impaired adult and the likely impact thereof on the individual. Concluding with practical examples on how the key role-players decide to reasonably accommodate the person in the workplace, as well as the broader society. This Model, Protocol and Guidelines has been developed in collaboration with experts in the field of audiology, hearing impairment, deafness, labour relations, the disability sector, etc. The talk includes guidelines for writing a functional report with recommendations for the reasonable accommodation of hearing-impaired adults.

The talk will be presented by Francis Slabber in collaboration with Fanie du Toit of the National Council for Persons Disabilities (NCPD) on behalf of NCPD.
