Salisha Maharaj on Tips for New Therapists

It is daunting starting out as a new therapist, something we can all relate to! That is why at Calabash we go out of our way to give you some helpful ideas from experienced practitioners - those who have been there and already made mistakes. Our selection of clips for new practitioners is to try and help you to grow your practice with advice from the people you wish you could ask. Everyone has something different to offer, based on what they can see has worked (or not worked) for them and those who’ve come after them. 

Listen to Salisha Maharaj, senior clinical psychologist at Tygerberg Hospital, give tips for therapists starting out. She has extensive experience in the public sector and has supervised interns for many years. She has seen many new therapists come and go and has many wise observations. Her tips speak to the need of new therapists to grow their practices and have reliable support. 

We are all so aware of how lonely it can be to be a psychologist - I’m often envious of people in other jobs, where they can easily ask for help from someone at the desk next to them, or chat with some colleagues at the water fountain. As a psychologist, it is vital to have access to colleagues and supervisors in order to grow your practice and to get support. Listen to what Salisha has to offer on this topic.
