Useful Resources for Neuroanatomy

Did you enjoy the Building Brains talks and would like to expand your knowledge of neuroanatomy?

Building Brains speaker Fiona Breytenbach shares her wonderful repertoire of neuroscience resources with us in this short clip below.

She begins by referring to state-of-the-art, interactive websites, which offer insight into structures and functions of the brain, as well as a YouTube channel, Neuroscientifically Challenged, which usefully explains elements of brain function in 2 minute inserts. 

Fiona then refers to seminal books on neuroscience by iconic authors, including Oliver Sacks, Eric Kandel, and V.S. Ramachandran. She really whets our appetite for these books, and reminds us of the legacy of neurologist Oliver Sacks and the fascinating case histories he documented in The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, among his other books. She refers to more recent popular books on the brain and its function, such as The Brain that Changes Itself, a fascinating book on neuroplasticity by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Norman Doidge. 

Fiona moves on to discussing two comprehensive textbooks that guide stroke rehabilitation, Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach, which she recommends as a very thorough reference resource covering many different presentations following a stroke, and Vision, Perception, & Cognition, a book that is long-standing on therapists' shelves. 

Lastly, Fiona refers to an app she recently discovered called Via Therapy, which leads the practitioner through a series of questions related to the patient's presentation, and then offers the best evidence-based approaches based on the answers given. This app specifically focuses on upper limb rehabilitation.
