Diet culture and discrimination against people of different body sizes is a pervasive aspect of our society, and has profound psychological and social consequences. Psychologists and registered counsellors frequently encounter clients who are impacted by body image difficulties, self-esteem issues and diet culture.
This talk contributes to creating awareness around the origins and impact of diet culture, and offers an alternative conceptualisation of the ideal relationship between an individual and food/eating, based on literature and studies behind the intuitive eating approach. This talk is situated at the intersection between dietetics and psychology, two disciplines which should be familiar with the core principles of the other, in order to provide optimal treatment to patients impacted by these issues.
