In this talk, expert forensic psychologist, Juana Horn again shares the lessons she has learned working with parents and children, this time focusing on alienating parenting behaviour. The contested terrain of the concepts and diagnoses of 'Parental Alienation Syndrome' (PAS) and 'Parental Alienation' (PA) are unpacked. Ways of avoiding stepping onto the minefield of a medical model diagnosis, especially in psycho-legal assessments dealing with alienating parenting behaviour are suggested; instead a psychodynamic approach is proposed. Although the talk does refer to psycho-legal assessments, it might be helpful and relevant to any practitioner working with children and families, since alienating parenting behaviour is a very common feature of parental conflict.
