Stuttering is often feared by health professionals, as it is perceived as difficult to treat with uncertain etiology and prognosis. At the same time, stuttering has a profound impact on an individual’s life in many areas. Tanya Lowenstein has a wealth of experience working with stutterers and their families. In this talk, she defines stuttering and describes its presentation and associated behaviours, followed by a discussion of etiological factors. Tanya then discusses her treatment approach, including the way in which she works with families, forming a therapeutic alliance with parents and offering committed support to them in working with their child who may be stuttering.
